In this course we will briefly trace the role of art historical and iconographic analyses in the interpretation of ancestral Mesoamerican art. We explore the corpus of art styles from the Formative (~2500 BCE-250 CE) through the Post-classic (900-1521 CE) across the region. We consider the intersectional role of ancient art in relation to mythical narratives, politics, ritual performance, cosmology, ideology, graphic communication (writing), and indigenous ontology.
