This course examines the development of the North American West as a recognized region over the past 500 years. It focuses on several primary themes: imperial conflict, the origins of globalism, ideologies of expansion, settler colonialism, ethnic conflict, environmental change, technology, politics, regional and national identity, and mythmaking.
