This course is designed to give beginning students in the life sciences a hands-on introductory research experience. This half-semester topical course has a primary focus on experiential learning and skill development that will provide a foundation for success in future courses. The complete genome of the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiar’s) has been sequenced and the genes responsible for the coat length, texture and the presence of furnishings have been identified.  Variations in these genes, including insertions and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are associated with specific traits in the dog's coat. Students will isolate genomic DNA from a set of dogs that are either personal pets or residents of the Wayne County Human
