Migration is a complex phenomenon and it has considerably shaped the life of Black people. In this course we will study the cultural, political, and socio-economic situations of Black migrants. Along with brief introductions to politics of im/migration across host nations, we will examine contemporary stories of Black migration in and across the borders between Africa, Europe and United States. Through popular media, films, documentaries, novels, essays, and short stories, course discussions will be centered on narratives of belonging, narratives of survival, identity politics, citizenship, and racism across Africa, Europe and USA. Following a comparative analysis of Black im/migrants lived experiences in these spaces, students will make sense of how displacement affect Black im/migrants human development in the global Black world. They will also examine Black im/migrants family dynamic in relations to both their original and host countries. [AH, GE, PPRE, SJ]
