An introduction to the visual and material cultures of Latin America from the late postclassic through the eighteenth century. Beginning with the diverse traditions of the Maya, Aztec, and Inka, our course will survey the period of early contact between indigenous Americans and Europeans. Topics include manuscripts, metalworks, textiles, and ceramics, as well as paintings, sculpture, urban planning, and religious architecture. We will place particular emphasis on the role of art in the formation of regional identity, as well as in contexts of colonialism and the Spanish Empire.
